Like many people across the country, we were excited to hear about Antony Gormley’s One and Other project for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London, and for the potential for craft to be represented as part of this celebration of ‘the whole of humanity’.

Every hour, 24 hours a day, for 100 days without a break, different people will make the Plinth their own, undertaking any activity they chose, as long as it’s legal, using any materials that they can carry and take away from the plinth itself. People will perform, contemplate and make the space their personal domain for a fleeting moment before handing over to the next occupant.

Deirdre Figueiredo, Director of Craftspace, Birmingham will be on the Plinth on Friday 17th July, between 8-9pm. She has a head for heights, no fear of strong winds, and is plotting a craft activity to surprise visitors to the square. The live feed to the Plinthis now available so if you can’t make it to see Deirdre in person, do watch her online.

We’d love to hear if there are any other craft makers, curators or champions participating in the project – if you are please let us know and we’ll feature you here on the website. And applications are still open for places on the Plinth at the One and Other website, running until 14 October 2009.
