UK Coral Reef - Dates extended

The UK Hyperbolic Crotchet Coral Reef at Firstsite has now been extended to 20th February 2010 to encompass half term. There will be future appearances of the UK Reef to be announced.

The UK Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef, presented in partnership with the Crafts Council, is a large-scale art work that consists of thousands of brightly coloured crocheted coral, created by craft makers all around the world.

The reef grows as it tours; participants at each location learn to crochet and add their coral to the reef.

The crocheted reef is a fusion of traditional craft techniques and experimental crochet using recycled materials such as plastic bags and wire. All the sections are models of hyperbolic planes, a geometric pattern resembling real coral, made by increasing the stitches on each row of crochet in equal numbers.

The reef has come ashore at firstsite for one month only so come along and join Colchester’s Crochet Challenge, join in with crochet and knitting events and add your contribution to the reef.
