Lux Craft at Origin 2011
Visualisation of Lux Craft at Origin 2011
The Crafts Council is delighted to announce Lux Craft, a new platform and space at Origin specifically conceived and designed to showcase lighting installations by contemporary craft makers.
Enabled through the support of Nokia Design, the Crafts Council is inviting applications from new and established makers, working in all disciplines, to submit proposals for installations that capture the beauty of light. Works submitted for selection can either include light emitting sources such as lamps or be conceived to celebrate the beauty of forms and surface finishes when lit.
Definition of Lux: The measure of the intensity, as perceived by the human eye, of light that hits or passes through a surface.
The submitted works will be assessed by a panel of industry experts, lead by the Crafts Council and Nokia Design, who have a long-standing history of enabling makers through open briefs and collaborations.
Nokia Design believes that today, craft is in the mastery of the design process rather than a pure return to tradition. For the Design team, their deep knowledge of materials and obsessive attention to detail is central to an approach that explores and exploits the relationship between traditional skills and progressive manufacturing techniques. The decision to partner this event provides a unique opportunity to demonstrate Nokia Design’s commitment to establishing a compelling new definition of craft in the modern product experience.
With Lux Craft, ten selected makers will be provided with a space to present their new works to over 17,500 visitors who attend Origin annually. Always seeking to create new opportunities to showcase craft, the Crafts Council established Lux Craft in response to requests from the new audience of architects and interiors designers Origin now attracts during the London Design Festival.
“Lux Craft is important in that it signals to makers that a range of industries want to be able to commission and apply their works and skills in different ways. It’s a very exciting initiative with huge potential.” Jimmy MacDonald, Director, Tent London.
“We are delighted that Nokia is supporting Lux Craft at Origin and recognising the event as an important platform to showcase ambitious high-quality contemporary craft. Nokia is a brand with a strong craft sensibility, with a history of working with makers to develop and innovate. We are looking forward to this range of stunning lighting installations.” Rosy Greenlees, Director, Crafts Council.
