Mister Maker was perhaps unsurprisingly the star of the show for the 16 primary school pupils that were at today’s launch of Start Imagining’s ‘From Tip to Ship’ competition. The Discover Greenwich visitor centre at the Old Royal Naval College was a fitting location to launch a competition that has been inspired by Diamond Jubilee Pageant Flotilla that will take place this June.
Start Imagining is a new initiative from Start, Cool it Schools, Freecycle and Craft Club to encourage children to be get creative through art and crafts projects that use scrap and reclaimed materials.
‘From Tip to Ship’ is a national competition, open to children aged 5 to 16 years old, to create a model ship (up to one metre long) using reclaimed materials thus giving a new lease of life to discarded materials. Start Imagining wants to ensure that children and young people always consider environmental concerns when they are being creative.
Joey Tabone, Start CEO, talked about the scheme and introduced the judging panel who will decide whose ships get to be part of an exhibition at the Greenwich Centre this June. The judges are Waterloo Road actress and celebrity baker Angela Griffin, CBeebies arts and crafts expert Mister Maker, Horrible Histories actress Martha Howe-Douglas, National Maritime Museum Royal River exhibition curator Kris Martin and the Crafts Council Chair Joanna Foster CBE.
We hope that the resources made available through Cool it Schools and Craft Club will ensure a majestic flotilla of ships of all varieties will be created by June.
