Space Craft: architecture meets making is a new touring exhibition developed by the Crafts Council and Habitat in partnership with Crafts Magazine that explores the relationship between architecture and making
The exhibition launches at the Platform Gallery at Habitat Kings Road, London, from 1 May to 1 June 2014.
The exhibition has been timed to coincide with COLLECT, the Craft Council's international art fair for contemporary objects, which takes place at the Saatchi Gallery from 9-12 May 2014.
Curated by design writer and editor Grant Gibson Space Craft features the work of ten creative practices: makers who are inspired by architecture and a new generation of architects that put the physical act of making at the heart of their work.
Work will include a piece from the Crafts Council Collection by celebrated ceramicist Edmund de Waal, willow sculptures by Laura Ellen Bacon, vibrant 3D-printed ceramics by Adam Nathaniel Furman and an entire cityscape made of wood and inspired by Grimms’ fairy tales by FleaFollyArchitects.
Curator Grant Gibson says:
Throughout my career as a journalist, writer and editor of magazines such as Blueprint and Crafts I've always been fascinated by work that attempts to break the perceived boundaries of its discipline and by artists, designers and architects who transgress their respective creative ghettos. If COLLECT sets out to prove that making is completely relevant to the fine art world, then Space Craft suggests it is vital to architecture too.
The exhibition will also host a specialist willow weaving workshop with Laura Ellen Bacon on Saturday 10 May, 10.30am – 3.30pm. Laura will show how she develops her creative practice through the use of sketchbooks to maquettes and the workshop will explore willow in its most abstract of forms.Tickets will be available from Platform Gallery at Habitat on King’s Road and through www.habitat.co.uk priced at £40 each.
