Bernhard Schobinger’s Rings of Saturn

Retrospective of the avant-garde jeweller’s work is at Manchester Art Gallery

The Rings of Saturn is Schobinger’s first solo exhibition at a UK museum and brings together over forty pieces from a career of so many years. The Swiss jeweller’s practice is often provocative using non-traditional materials in his work such as nails, lightening rods and shards of glass.

Curator of the show, Jo Bloxham says in the current issue of Crafts magazine: ‘There are artists who really touch your brain, and some are more to the stomach. He goes straight in your stomach, and you don’t know exactly why. He has brutal work, very emotional work, expressive work. You don’t really need a lot of explanation but it touches you.’

The Rings of Saturn is at Manchester Art Gallery until 19 October.
