First Decade goes live!

A treasure trove of Crafts Council archive material

Today we've gone live with our Heritage Lottery funded First Decade project!

We have a rich archive of sketches, photographs, posters, catalogues, letters (and more) relating to the objects in our Collection. We have now digitised over 400 of these previously unpublished archive items from 1972 to 1982 – a very exciting time for British craft and the first decade of the Collection’s existence.

Alongside this we’ve commissioned new digital photography and recorded interviews with significant makers from the era including Fred Baier, Kaffe Fassett, Susanna Heron, Carol McNicoll and Janice Tchalenko.

Visitors to the site can see an interactive timeline plotting the early days of the Crafts Council (formerly the Crafts Advisory Committee), dip into Crafts Council posters from the time, and see all the new digitised archive items grouped together.

We have also developed learning resources inspired by the First Decade participation events activities for our Handling Collection

The First Decade project will allow people to learn more about this very important decade of British craft and be inspired by what they discover.
