We ask makers, curators, designers, creative practitioners and the Crafts Council team to select their favourite object from the Crafts Council Collection and to tell us why.

I really love the fact that this piece is technically excellent, yet doesn’t seem to take itself too seriously.
Last April Gallery Oldham applied to receive work as part of the Crafts Council Museum Purchase Fund. This is a scheme where museums can borrow work from the Crafts Council collection for up to five years. We were absolutely delighted to be one of the three museums in the country to be awarded work under this scheme.
Gallery Oldham has an excellent collection of British Studio Ceramics from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It includes all the names you would expect – Bernard Leach, Mary Rogers, Martin Brother, Clare Curneen, Natasha Daintry, to name a few. We are still actively collecting in this area, and are keen that we are able to show developments in ceramics from Britain and abroad.
Vipoo Srivilasa’s Patience Flower series is inspired by his studies of eighteenth century Meissen Snowball Blossom Teapot which he saw in Germany. He made a series of these figures between 2010 and 2014. He gave the series the name due do the enormous amount of time it takes him to painstakingly create each piece.
Patience Flower XXIII has proven really popular with our visitors. People definitely appreciate the level of skill needed to make a piece with this much intricate detail. I really love the fact that this piece is technically excellent, yet doesn’t seem to take itself too seriously. The figure is not recognisable as an existing creature, leading people to speculate as to whether it is a bear or an alien, perhaps. We’ll be sorry to see this piece go at the end of our loan period. However we’ll be happy that this wonderful, delicate alien-like creature will have been resident in our galleries for several years and that it will continue to be available via the Crafts Council Collection.
Vipoo Srivilasa’s Patience Flower XXIII was bought for the Crafts Council Collection via the Museum Purchase Fund at COLLECT 2015. It is currently on display at Gallery Oldham.
