Lucy Di Silvio (LDS) is Professor of Tissue Engineering, and Head of the Biomaterials, Biomimetics & Biophotonics Division, based in the Dental Institute, King’s College London, Guy’s Hospital
The mission of the Division is to enhance healthcare outcomes on a world-wide scale, through its research, training and research translation programmes. The division provides a unique interface between basic and applied research through to clinical translation.
LDS’s research is focussed on high quality science based on the regeneration of tissues using stem cell technology and its translation and application for specific clinical problems related largely to oral, craniofacial and orthopaedics. Also, biocompatibility of novel materials, 2D, 3D cell model (Bioreactor), and cell-material interactions.
Developing regenerative medicine strategies for musculo-skeletal conditions relating to bone, articular cartilage damage and osteochondral defects e.g. cell-seeded scaffolds to direct differentiation of stem cells for in vivo bone and cartilage regeneration. Her groups major focus is vascularization of grafts ex-vivo and their integration with host tissue.
LDS has over 22 years experience in the field, and has published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals, numerous book chapters and is Editor of “Cellular response to biomaterials”. Over the years, she has formulated numerous International collaborations both in Europe and worldwide.
LDS is immediate past President of the United Kingdom Society for Biomaterials (UKSB) and Secretary of the European Society of Biomaterials (ESB, 2009-2013) and is co-President of the World Biomaterials Congress (WBC) 2020. In June 2011 she was awarded the ‘Ordine della Stella d'Italia’ (The Order of the Star of Italy) “to recognise those expatriates who have made an outstanding contribution to the preservation and promotion of national prestige abroad”.
