UK based studio glass maker, recognised nationally and internationally for unique and vibrant free-blown glass
Stuart has been making glass for 30 years. His glassmaking career began via education in the North East with a BA (hons) in 3D design (glass with ceramics) from Sunderland University. After graduating in 1988, Stuart completed a one year post graduate diploma at the International Glass Centre, Brierley Hill.
Employment as head maker at Lakeland Crystal followed and two years later he set up Stuart Akroyd Glass Designs. The freedom of having his own studio allowed his creativity to flourish. Stuart had a desire to break away from the standard designs he had been making as an employee, restrained by another person’s vision. He began to create forms with asymmetry and a unique vibrancy. He also immersed himself in the creative world, outside his own studio, by teaching at the University and as a non-exec director at Arts Resource. In 1999 New Glass Review (Corning Museum of Glass competition) selected one of his one-off forms in the 100 best pieces of glass made in the world that year.
Stuart moved to Nottingham in 2000 and expanded his studio to give his professional development a new direction. His adaptation of traditional Venetian techniques increased the physical possibilities of how the glass could be worked. A multitude of new designs followed. Stuart still continues to seek new ways of working and creates award winning designs. Most recently the BCTF award for excellence 2012 and in 2015 awards for Membership excellence and International excellence from Design Factory.
As a Fellow member of Design Factory he has been able to continue his professional development: Including involvement in selection panels, mentoring and group exhibiting. It is due to the support of Design Factory and UKTI that he has been able to build upon his national reputation and establish an International presence.
Winner of Design Factory Membership Excellence and International Excellence awards 2015, winner of BCTF award for excellence 2012
