‘Sonia and Michael have built a quite unique business model in the UK and Europe. Everybody in the Applied Arts community knows them and wants them to sell their publications, which range from small exhibition catalogues sold for £5 to rare books in limited editions, and often with exclusivity when an artist edits a catalogue of his or her work.’

Isabelle Busnel, Designer-maker, London

Walk round any major UK craft fair, event and symposium and you are likely to see them. They have become a perennial presence and a welcome addition for craft and design enthusiasts looking to acquire the finest quality craft publications. At COLLECT 2012, Chrome Yellow Books (CYB) will once again be present on the 2nd floor.

Owners and founders Sonia and Michael Collins both have creative backgrounds. Isabelle Busnel writes that “Sonia graduated from Central St Martins with a BA in textiles and Michael was a painter. After 10 years working for a design and architect company, Sonia moved to CAA (Contemporary Applied Arts) as gallery manager for 11 years. During that time set up a collection of books about craft, sourcing them from abroad and widening the scope of books available in the UK. She also oversaw a series of conferences about contemporary jewellery. During this period she realised that books were a great way of promoting the artists she was passionate about.”

  • Since May 2011, Chrome Yellow Books have continued to build on relationships within Europe. Their bookstand at the Luxembourg Glass Biennale resulted in invitations from Prague, Istanbul and Stockholm. After a successful book sale for the jewellery students at Maastricht Academy, they were invited back to arrange an Academy-wide sale, and invite neighbouring academies in Belgium and Holland.

CYB have recently returned from Schmuck 2012 in Munich where they were appointed the official bookshop, and will be bringing a range of new publications from exhibiting artists at the show, plus the Schmuck 2012 catalogue.

This year at COLLECT, CYB will be offering a special 20% discount on an impressive selection of books from Arnoldsche Art Publishers. These will include the launch of a new book at COLLECT – watch this space for further updates and new developments.
