CraftCube: Collection: Angela Jarman
CraftCube: Collection presents a new and exciting way of experiencing contemporary craft by bringing the techniques, materials and environment behind crafted objects to life. The freestanding, 3×3 metre CraftCubes are complete, walk-in, experiential display environments containing objects and dynamic interpretation. They are compact, lightweight and are suitable for display in museums and galleries, libraries, higher education galleries, corporate environments or at events, conferences and festivals.
On display inside this cube is Angela Jarman’s Nap, acquired for the Crafts Council Collection in 2009. The object is brought to life through lively audiovisuals: a large scale projection gives an impression of the maker’s studio environment and a table top mounted screen features close up documentary of maker’s hands at work. Upon entering CraftCube, visitors can immerse themselves in the studio environment and the processes involved in creating this fascinating object.
Made of solid glass, Nap’s surface is inspired by the stigma of a flower – how this surface texture has been achieved, will be revealed when entering the cube.
Angela Jarman’s creative ideas as a whole stem from her long interest in biology and the natural world. “I look to many sources for inspiration – animal, vegetable or mineral, but particularly aspects of growth, reproduction and multiplication – all the while trying to retain a sense of ambiguity. I want my work to refer to nature, but to appear unnatural. By repeating and duplicating a specific part of a fruit or flower I am able to build a model or surface texture that is far removed from the original source. I use black glass because I like the way it seems to suck in the light, appears so dense and has such a barren and sinister quality.”
Jarman received a Crafts Council Setting Up Grant in 2002. As well as the Crafts Council Collection, her work is held in other public collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. Her studio is based in London.
