CraftCube: Collection: Gareth Neal

CraftCube: Collection presents a new way of experiencing contemporary craft by bringing the techniques, materials and environment behind crafted objects to life. The freestanding, 3×3 metre CraftCubes are complete, walk-in, experiential display environments containing objects and dynamic interpretation. They are compact, lightweight and are suitable for display in museums and galleries, libraries, higher education galleries, corporate environments or at events, conferences and festivals.

This display focuses on Gareth Neal’s Anne table, acquired for the Crafts Council Collection in 2009. Neal utilises new technologies to complement traditional hand skills. The surface of this table is cut by a saw blade mounted on a CNC routing machine, enabling complex saw cuts. The CraftCube display reveals the clever juxtaposition of old and new forms and techniques and unveils the ghost of furniture past inside this contemporary piece. Neal likes the fact that you have to look closely at his work to see what’s going on within it: “I’m fascinated by the idea that you don’t have to get an object immediately”. The CraftCube content plays on this fascination in unexpected ways.

Neal is a graduate of Buckinghamshire College BA (Hons) Furniture Design & Craftsmanship and is currently a lecturer at Staffordshire University. His practice is based in London.
