Out of the Box is a loans scheme encouraging galleries, museums and university collections to borrow on a long term basis groups of objects made between 1970 and 1994. The key criterion is that the selection of objects must enhance interpretation and display of existing or new permanent craft collections or inspire new areas of craft collecting. Museums and galleries can draw on a Collection of 1,000 objects which encompass all the main media including ceramics, glass, textiles, furniture, metalwork, jewellery, calligraphy, lettering and bookbinding. The Collection reflects excellence in British craft making from both established figures and emerging makers.

Out of the Box is a rolling programme and with each passing year, another year will be made available for loan. The initial period of loan is five years and is renewable.

Out of the Box runs alongside our two established loans programmes supporting galleries, museums, university collections through short fixed term exhibition loans and long term loans.
