The Memorial Arts Charity is devoted to maintaining and renewing Britain's long tradition of fine hand carved lettering in stone, still practiced by a small number of artists-craftsmen and women. The charity is addressing the lack of available training by running nationwide workshops, an apprenticeship scheme, and is working towards re-establishing a full-time lettering course. Other main objective: to establish a permanent exhibition of contemporary memorial art, which will be important for demonstrating the talents and creativity of letter carvers, and is intended to be a national resource. Courses offered include a short 5-day letter carving in stone and wood carving courses, including letter drawing and design, and a symposium for more experienced practitioners.
