installation, a collaboration between the
maker, thewearer and the viewer. For
some likeDorothyHogg, wearabilitywas
an important issue, creating an intense
relationship betweenmaker andwearer.
For others, it was display, not the human
interaction that was pre-eminent, the
wearer was simply a canvas for their ideas
and their questioning of society. Pieces
were so large that they dominated
the human scale, requiring enormous
confidence by thewearer.
Much of it was not really designed
for wearing, but as free-standing or
wall-mounted, smaller scale art works.
TedNoten, who ismost famous for his
Turbo Princess
pendant, which featured
a littlemousewearing a small pearl
necklace cast in acrylic, mademuch larger
pieces that include solid acrylic handbags
and suitcases containing guns.
Jewellerywas paraded in new forums,
(although the exhibition doesn’t touch
on the brave soulswho commissioned,
bought andwore theNew Jewellery).
It became a formof communication
in both public and personal spaces,
shouting I AMHERE, noticeme, think
about what I amsaying. Ultimately,
New Jewellery forged conversations
and commentaries on social, economic
and political topics. It took art to the
street, not just the gallery. I AMHERE
aims to do the same thing.
