The capital has long had festivals devoted
to fine art and design, but from6–10May,
making gets its days in the sunwith the
launch of the annual LondonCraftWeek.
Themulti-site festival takes place right
across London, embracing a packed and
varied programme that includes 59
events – with a series of ‘anchors’ led by
the Crafts Council’s long-established fair
COLLECT, and organisations such as
Craft Central andCockpit Arts throwing
open their doors to the public.

theQueenElizabeth ScholarshipTrust
has brought together a group of fine artists
andmakerswith the finished results on

have two craftsmen demonstrating their
skills at itsOldBond Street showroom.

a pavilion, designed by architect Allies
&Morrison, that will play host to
demonstrations, workshops and talks
organised byContemporary AppliedArts.
Each day also sees a carefully curated
series of events designed to engage
people in the process ofmaking and taking
place in a selected part of the city.
On the eve of COLLECT, Thursday
7May, visitors can see carréduckermake
a pair of shoes at Gieves&Hawkes on
Savile Row; onFriday, TomDonhou from
Bike 14will be fashioning bike-frames at
SpinLondon onNewOxford Street, while
on the Saturday, TheWyvernBindery in
Clerkenwell will be letting visitors in for a
good, old-fashioned nose-around.
Guy Salter, founder and chairman of
LondonCraftWeek, believes the new
event will bring ‘an ever-increasing quality
and volume of collectors and customers’
to London; a sentiment echoed by the
mayor of London, Boris Johnson, who
says that it will ‘throw the spotlight on
this vibrant and growing sector and the
highly skilled craftspeople at work in our
city today.’
A guide will be available twoweeks
before the launch, andwill be given away
by participating partner venues.
