Open Studios at Cockpit Arts
Time for a bit of Christmas shopping, so I headed over to Cockpit Arts Holborn for their Open Studios weekend.

It was a dark and very wet, but the sign and the faint smell of Christmas told me I was getting close.

First thing I spotted was this poster by Francisca Prieto, with its chopped up and floating typography seems to make little sense until she shows me what it can become…

...ta da!

Here’s some of Tamasin Gambell’s work. She collects vintage scarves and then adds another layer of pattern onto them – reworking them for contemporary audiences. The textiles then become covers for notebooks or just new upcycled scarves.

Jo Hayes Ward was showing this new and wonderful aluminium brooch.

These are some pieces from Yasmin Rizvi’s S/S 2010 Collection – check out the intricately hand-curled feathers on the piece on the left.

Known for his sculptural, graphic ceramics, which always look constructivist to me, Jonathan Wade has brought out a new series of simpler vases just in time for present hunters.

Also Katie Adams, known for her tableware with architectural landscapes, was premiering her new ceramics – quite a massive departure for her work aesthetically.

So there was plenty to fill our stockings and fit under our tree. And of course not forgetting what goes onto the tree, here’s a decoration by paper-folder extraordinaire Francisca Prieto.

I came away with a batch of Christmas cards by SORT (Society of Revisionist Typographers)... in fact, that reminds me, I should get writing…
