Annual show at the Garden Gallery

The Garden Gallery in Broughton, Hampshire, opens its doors for its annual outdoor summer show from 2 June – 25 July
This is a much more intimate affair than some of the other regular outdoor summer fixtures. Gallery owner Rachel Bebb’s garden is quite cottagey in feel with none of the long vistas of bigger sites, and so there’s a pleasing sense of discovery as you come across pieces unexpectedly tucked away behind a shrub or hidden behind/inside a shed – it’s like a sculptural treasure hunt.
And the mix of pieces on show is equally pleasing. For a crafts audience there are pots and sculptural ceramics by the likes of Carloyn Genders (a Garden Gallery favourite), Wendy Hoare and Stephen Plumstead. There’s also glass by familiar names such as Richard Jackson, Sally Fawkes and Carole Waller (who now uses glass to ‘petrify’ her textile banners), as well as by names less well known to readers of Crafts Magazine such as Johannes von Stumm, whose work is inspired by the ice and rock forms of the Alps. Then there’s figurative sculpture in a range of media – stone, resin, ceramic, bronze – as well as a group of abstract pieces such as Jonathan Loxley’s lovely curving marble form Belladonna. And finally there’s the usual sprinkling of sundials including one by letter carver Martin Cook and garden furniture.
