Botanic Gardens at Platform

Work by Laura Baxter

Work by Laura Baxter

The Platform Gallery is bringing the outside inside this summer with a new exhibition focusing on all things green (27 June – 22 August)

Botanic Gardens is a new take on the summer garden show, featuring work about the garden rather than displaying work in the garden. It’s a mixed media show with pieces by 23 artists, all of whom share a common interest in plants and their structure – whether it be at a detailed, microscopic level or a giant, abstract level. ‘The exhibitors were all chosen because of how they looked at nature – they are all inspired by the same subject matter but the interesting thing to see is how the outcomes are all very different’, says Platform Gallery’s Catrin Mostyn Jones.

Highlights include ceramist Sarah Hillman, who is based at London’s Cockpit Arts, is showing a series of neutral-coloured bowls decorated with a simple cut-out of a stylised petal – quite different from her usual brightly coloured bowls. And jeweller Laura Baxter, best known for her small brooches, is showing some much bigger, wall-mounted pieces having been given an opportunity to experiment with scaling up her work due to a recent commission. Other exhibitors include garden show stalwart Ruth Moilliet, ceramist Andrew Wicks and enamel artist Janine Partington.
