Choice at Kath Libbert

Ring by Stephanie Jendi Matterhorn

An exhibition showcasing work by eight jewellers is on at Kath Libbert’s Saltaire gallery until 27 September

Called Choice, the show is all about personal taste, both curator Kath Libbert’s and the general public’s. The idea is that Libbert has chosen her favourite designers (the eight artists featured here), and the public can now make their choice from the pieces on show, with the winner being announced on the last day of the exhibition in a special People’s Choice event. It’s a good excuse for Libbert to show a range of interesting designers without being tied down to a specific theme, and as for letting the public vote for their favourites, it’s a way of getting people to engage more directly with the pieces, especially as they are allowed to have their photographs taken wearing them.

Makers to look out for here include Sabine Lang who works in transparent plastic to make delicate necklaces which look as though made out of soap bubbles. Swedish maker Marta Mattssson incorporates mini resin elephant heads and cutesy creatures inspired by Pokemon cartoons. And then there’s Erik Urbschat whose glittering, precision-engineered Hedgehog rings with their rows of gold and silver spines are designed to look good and give you a hand massage at the same time.
