Crafts Council at the V&A
Detail of work by Walter Jack
The Crafts Council has no intention of missing out on the London Design Festival fun and so is presenting Hand Built at the V&A’s Design Embassy this week (21-25 September)
Taking an architectural theme, it features work by five UK makers all of whom have made work specifically for an architectural setting. So there’s Walter Jack, who calls himself a designer for the built environment, and who specialises in sculptural work for public spaces, showing alongside letter-carver Gary Breeze whose CV includes work for the Scottish Parliament and a memorial for the victims of the Bali bombing. Both will be presenting sculptural pieces designed for specific outside architectural spaces.
Glass artist Eleanor Long makes work for both inside and outside spaces and is particularly concerned with linking the built environment with the natural world exploiting the reflective qualities of glass. Then there’s textile artist Ptolemy Mann who will be exhibiting some of her woven pieces as well as showing what she achieved as colour consultant for Kings Mill Hospital in Nottinghamshire. And finally, furniture maker Charlie Whinney has made a wonderfully exuberant bent wood sculpture that twists and writhes its way from the gallery entrance into the gallery itself – a great, eye-catching show opener.
