Crafts Council competition
The Crafts Council has just launched a competition to find a maker to create the official gifts for the Shanghai Expo 2010
This is a real coup for British craft as it means that it will be firmly centre stage at next year’s Expo, sharing the limelight with its all-too-often more dominant siblings architecture, fine art and design.
The competition (organised by the CC in conjunction with the British Council and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office) is twofold; the first part is for the official British gift to Shanghai which will go in the Expo Legacy Display, and the second part is for a series of 80 limited edition pieces that will be given out to VIPs visiting the UK pavilion. Both commissions have to be inspired by the Expo theme of ‘Better City, Better Life’ and, crucially, have to be made out of metal, ceramic, acrylic, glass or textile. It’s a high-profile commission for what promises to be a high-profile building, designed by Thomas Heatherwick Studios.
Closing date for applications is 8 January 2010.
