craftwork 09 at BFI this Sunday
Still detail from The Seed, Johnny Kelly, 2008
The Southbank's BFI is home to a bunch of crafty short films this Sunday, 13 September, as part of onedotzero's adventures in motion.
Bundled together under the title craftwork 09, these films reflect a revived interest in handcrafts within film making. There’s a range of materials and techniques on show from Multitouch Barcelona’s computer run by a human or George Wu’s experiments with a Stanley knife and a piece of plain paper to Taboo Plus’s urban story sketched out by making and unmaking crochet stitches across fabric. Many films refer explicitly to their ‘handmadeness’ and often present an intense, almost obsessive, dedication to the intricacies of stop-frame animation. The programme is made up of 22 shorts by directors from Japan, Australia, Israel and Germany as well as many from the UK. With all this to choose from, it’s pretty difficult to not be impressed.
