Cut 2 on Fold installation
Studio Seven textile artists are staging Cut 2 On Fold, an extraordinary installation work to coincide with the Stroud International Textile Festival from 1-21 May
Cut 2 on Fold starts life as an interactive textile installation, before moving on to encompass performance art and dance. It tells the story of how a pattern turns into a finished garment using a group of six tailor’s dummies, each draped with half-made clothes and surrounded by the materials needed to complete each garment. The idea is that the clothes will be added to by audiences and workshops during the exhibition so that by the end each dummy will be wearing a finished costume – although of course neither the public, nor the organisers know what the finished costumes will look like.
And then comes the really interesting bit; the group will stage a series of performances bringing the installation to life with dancers taking the role of the dummies – dolls and puppets will also take to the stage in a weird and wonderful marriage of textiles, inanimate objects and live performers. ‘It’s a performance-based project, but the ideas for the performance are generated by the textiles’, says Studio Seven’s Sarah Cant. ‘It’s a way of showing textiles in a completely different context and it’s exciting to work with people like dancers and choreographers outside our field although the work is all being pushed forward by textiles.’
