Cut & Fold

Work by Maggie Hollingworth

The latest exhibition at New Brewery Arts focuses on the different ways makers use paper as a craft material (until 3 January)

The idea behind Cut & Fold is to show just how much can be achieved with paper. So there’re dramatic sculptural pieces – the show opens with Susan Stockwell’s giant dress – as well as more delicate pieces such as Luis Acosta’s carefully constructed paper jewellery and Jayme McGowan’s quirky 3D paper pictures. The exhibits underline the wide range of techniques and materials paper artists use: some, like Tracey Bush who makes butterflies out of old envelopes, re-cycle printed paper by cutting and folding, others like Richard Sweeney use pristine white paper to create sculptural pieces, while a third group like Maggie Hollingworth, prefer to work with paper pulp treating it almost like clay. Curator Fiona Haser says ‘The exhibition tells a story about the magic of paper. It’s such a humble material but you can use it to make things that are really moving.’

And it’s not just the exhibiting artists who are doing the making at Brewery Arts, as Haser is very keen to get the public involved too. They’ve been invited to create mini sculptures out of their preview cards which they can add to Richard Sweeney’s gallery installation. There are also a series of artist-led workshops programmed.
