Inner Voices, a new jewellery exhibition curated by Dorothy Hogg, is on at Contemporary Applied Arts from 26 June – 22 August

Dorothy Hogg is one of the big names in contemporary jewellery and is highly respected both as a maker and a teacher – she was head of the Jewellery and Silversmithing Department at Edinburgh College of Art for over 20 years. And that makes this show quite a coup for CAA as anything curated by Hogg is bound to pull in serious jewellery fans who are interested in seeing her take on today’s scene.

Hogg hasn’t presented a large-scale survey of what’s going on in the world of contemporary jewellery but has limited herself to just 12 makers, chosen she says because: ‘I felt a connection between their approach and my own.’ The 12 are from both the UK and abroad and include emerging artists such as Matthew Brady, as well as better-known names such as Helen Carnac and Angela O’Kelly. Hogg explains: ‘Each maker pursues a strongly individual line where the art of what they do leads the mastery they have of materials and techniques, imbuing their work with a feeling of effortless quality.’

The other makers are Zoe Arnold, Birgit Laken, Beth Legg, Susan May, Sally Marsland, Maria Militsi, Alistair McCallum, Jessica Turrell and Mizuko Yamada.
