Jane Dorner at Zest

work by Jane Dorner

Glass artist Jane Dorner will be exhibiting her colourful glass at London’s Zest gallery from 16 July – 29 August

‘I’m trying to use glass as a medium for abstract painting,’ says Dorner, adding, ‘I use colours and then they combine with the heat in a way you maybe hadn’t predicted which adds an element of dynamism to the finished pieces.’ Dorner, who came to glass after a career in publishing, has developed a technique using pâte de verre, which she applies to a mould and then fires, before picking it up on a bubble of hot glass to make swirling colour patterns. The result is a series of glass vessels and wall panels decorated with bold swathes of colour, often in zingy oranges, red and yellows, although some are decorated with more delicate circles.

Dorner is currently working on a commission for the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. She’s making a large-scale wall panel out of a series of glass roundels for the reception area, and some of the pieces in the Zest show are based on her research for the project. They reflect her interest in the parallels between the fragility of the human body and that of a glass object.
