On the Edge
Work by textile artist Muriel Clement goes on show at Swansea’s Mission Gallery until 3 January
The venue couldn’t be more appropriate as Clement was one of a group of artists who helped set the gallery up in the 70s and has been involved in a number of shows since then. The gallery’s Amanda Roderick says: ‘She’s got a great affection for the building and we’ve got a great affection for her. Her work is so accomplished and so beautiful – and surprisingly contemporary – that we wanted to give her a solo show.’
The 17 pieces here are mainly new works, and all show Clement’s continuing mastery as a weaver. They’re broadly abstract pieces, characterised by swathes of glowing hues delicately dovetailed into areas of contrasting shades, reflecting her passionate interest in colour. Many hint at landscape forms.
