Papered Parlour opens in London
A new contemporary craft venue offering classes, exhibitions and events opens in South London on 2 May
The Papered Parlour, the brainchild of Claire Heafford and Louise Hall, started life as an artists’ studio a year ago, but has now grown into a full-blown craft centre. ‘We found as more artists joined us they wanted a chance to engage with the public and share their skills and arranging workshops seemed a perfect way to do this’, says Heafford. The centre’s heart is a room papered with screen-printed wall paper – hence the name – and the idea is to turn this into a social space with a cafe where people can drop in for a coffee before deciding to join a craft workshop. Courses on offer include a series of evening classes on knitting and quilting and patchwork, as well as full-day sessions which range from ring making and life drawing sessions to screen printing and letter pressing.
The venue opens on 2 May with a special launch day of free events such as The Great Proletarian Clothes Swap, and an exhibition preview, What Goes Around, featuring ‘upcycled’ mid-century furniture by Catherine May and Clara Vuletich. The day’s activities are rounded off with a tea dance.
