The National Craft Centre, Kilkenny is the first overseas stop for an exhibition of rings, originated by the Dutch gallery Galerie Beeld & Aambeeld (at Kilkenny until 26 April)

Herinner-ring/Remember-Ring showcases work by 90 international jewellers who were asked to create rings based on the theme of remembering.

As might be expected the variety of approach is huge. Some have chosen very specific memories to focus on; for example Rachel McKnight’s ring commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Omagh bombing with 29 trailing strands attached to the ring representing the bomb victims, while Tore Svensson’s piece represents the cottage he lived in as a child in Sweden. Others have treated their memories in a more generalised style, looking at ideas about time passing – Doris Manninger’s ring incorporates an intricate clockwork mechanism symbolising time past – or thought processes as in Michiel Teunen’s ring in the shape of a brainwave.
