Steve Wright at Milagros
Milagros, London’s Mexican art and craft emporium, will be showing work by artist Steve Wright until 9 November
The exhibition came about through a chance visit by Wright to the shop during which he and owners Juliette Tuke and Tom Bloom realised how much they had in common – particularly their shared interest in Mexican folk art. Wright is a man of many talents and has worked, amongst other things, as a fine artist and a stationary designer but this show is clearly all about craft and the handmade.
Many of the pieces are in the form of colourful banners, collaged with a textile patchwork of naïve folk art-style figures and animals – some seeming to reference fairground puppets and fairytale characters, others traditional masks or the more glitzy religious icons often seen in Latin American churches. Others, both flat and three-dimensional, are made out of mosaic – built up using small ceramic fragments as well as more quirky found objects such as mugs, broken dolls, bottle tops, even false teeth. Many are inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead and reflect Wright’s interest in how Mexicans have a closer – and perhaps psychologically healthier – relationship with death than their European counterparts.
