Studio Silver Today

The Goldsmiths’ Company has joined forces with the National Trust to show contemporary silversmithing alongside antique silver at Dunham Massey in Cheshire (until 31 October)

Called Studio Silver Today, this initiative is another example of the Goldsmith’s proactive support of today’s makers. As well as sponsoring an exhibition of silversmith Shannon O’Neil’s work at Dunham Massey, an 18th-century National Trust property with a serious collection of silver, they’ve also got O’Neil to do a type of residency so she will be working alongside the exhibits, making a specially commissioned Dunham Massey Beaker. It’s a compare-and-contrast exercise designed to show how the techniques used by O’Neil and her 18th-century counterparts are the same – although the end products may differ. And in an imaginative touch, the finished beaker will be the winning prize for a draw open to visitors.
