Richard Wright had been awarded this year's Turner Prize. He received his prize last night from Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy. Other artists nominated this year were Enrico David, Roger Hiorns and Lucy Skaer.

The Glasgow-based artist is known for his intricate wall paintings in architectural spaces. Often focusing on corners or more liminal spaces, Wright’s work for the Turner Prize exhibition, is a large gold leaf painting created in situ using traditional and time-consuming techniques like pouncing, a method used by Renaissance fresco-makers to transfer images to a wall’s surface. At the close of the exhibition on 3 January the work will be totally painted over. Even though Wright’s work may ultimately be conceptual, this year’s award has been characterised by some as both a move away from YBA commercialism and a return to traditional skills.
