Camberwell comes to Edinburgh this summer during an exhibition of ceramics at the Scottish Gallery (8 July – 1 August)
The ceramists showing at the Scottish Gallery are all based at Vanguard Court Studios in London’s Camberwell. They’re a mixed bag stylistically speaking, but all share a commitment to high professional standards and an interest in intellectual practice.
The exhibitors include Welsh ceramist Catrin Howell, who makes sculptural pieces often in the shape of animal heads based on her interest in myth and fantasy. Danish Merete Rasmussen and Suffolk-born Annie Turner also make sculptural pieces, but in a much more pared-down abstract idiom and both are inspired by natural forms and the landscape. The other exhibitors make vessel shapes, although you would be unlikely to actually use Robert Cooper’s pieces domestically as they are more of a variation on the vessel theme than actual vessels. Carina Ciscato’s delicate porcelain bowls with her trademark ripped edges are also really just decorative, but Alex Hagan and Sun Kim’s pots are more obviously functional and Chris Keenan, who has designed pieces for Habitat, makes porcelain pots which are just crying out to be used.
