Winter Warmth

Textiles in all their different shapes and sizes go on show at Falkirk’s Callendar House and adjoining Park Gallery this winter (until 31 December)

The 600-year-old Scottish stately home normally hosts heritage-related exhibitions, but for the last five years it’s branched out into contemporary craft around Christmas time. Last year the focus was on print and this year they turn the spotlight onto textiles. ‘We thought textiles was a really interesting field with lots of things going on,’ says Callendar House’s Gillian Smith. These Winter Warmth exhibitions are Callendar House’s biggest shows of the year and they take over both the historic galleries in the house and the adjoining contemporary Park Gallery: ‘We try to show as much as possible in these shows’, explains Smith.

The 50 plus exhibitors were selected from a long list of over 160 with the judging panels looking for quality, variety and pieces that would work in the two gallery spaces. The curators also invited a group of, what Smith describes, as ‘bigger players’ to join the show, so there’s Michael Brennand-Wood, Donna Wilson, Deirdre Nelson, Claire Moynihan and Ode Marie showing alongside less well known names. Consequently it promises to be a real mix of styles and techniques but is bound to be a good chance to see some new work, and to snap up some early Christmas presents.
