Leeds's Craft Centre and Design Gallery’s current exhibition, Without Colour, on until 27 June, shows that you don’t have to be colourful to make an impact

It showcases work by ten ceramists and ten jewellers working in a range of techniques and media, but all united in their use of colour. Or rather, their non-use of colour, as all the exhibits are black or white, or a mixture of the two. ‘It makes for a really dramatic show and all the pieces sit very well together visually,’ says the Craft Centre’s Jane Needham.

Although the colours are limited, there’s a great variety of tone and texture in the exhibits. They range from Jacqueline Cullen’s glittering jewellery, which is literally jet black as it’s made from Whitby Jet, to Pam Dodds’s spiky ceramic forms in which the gleaming white exteriors are set off by the black interiors. And then there are all sorts of graduations in between including Sally Bradley’s smoky charcoal raku pots and Suzanne Potter’s simple silver flowerheads.
