Cadeaux d'Amour

Cups, Anja Lubach

Love is in the air at Liverpool’s Bluecoat Display Centre as their current exhibition is designed to inspire all those romantics looking for Valentine’s Day presents (until l3 March)

Cadeaux d’Amour – An Exhibition of Tokens of Affection features a range of pieces which ‘celebrate the theme of love’. Some deal with the theme directly, such as Alan Ardiff’s heart-shaped gold pendant or Helen Beard’s delightful porcelain vase Love is… Hanging Out His Underpants depicting a decidedly unromantic row of washing. Other pieces, such as Michelle Holmes’ intriguing textile Celestial Bodies, shows a lacy map of the skies against a midnight blue maritime chart, are less obvious and make you wonder why they’ve been included in the show. In fact most of the show, including Virginia Graham’s collage-style ceramic tea pot and Elizabeth Willow’s chirpy little wire bird covered in sheet music, are in this category and show Bluecoat’s willingness to push their buyers beyond the traditional Valentine’s Day fare of hearts and red roses towards something a little more unexpected.
