African leaves
Photographer: Andrew Paterson Photography
A hanging, made to commission, using sun-printed African cloth decorated with leaves. Each leaf was embroidered using random-dyed silk threads of differing textures, and with some embellishment with beads to enhance the texture.
Crewel work
Photographer: Andrew Paterson Photography
This sample of crewel work was done to explore the depth of texture and shading achievable by using fine wool threads.
Giverny
Photographer: Andrew Paterson Photography
An exploration of stitch using colour and direction rather than stitch variety to create texture. Inspired by Monet's garden at Giverny, the embroidery was worked over a random-dyed piece of chiffon overlaid on calico.
