Sande/Mende

About this project

This private commission is based on the traditional masks of the Mende people of Sierra Leone. The masks are life size and fully wearable. Traditionally, many elements of the carved wooden masks are deeply significant, so it was important to keep elements such as the downcast eyes and elaborate hairdo. The faces are felted from Merino wool, with hand spun locally grown Black Welsh Mountain. The finished felt is embroidered to highlight certain details and mimic the intricate carving patterns.
