About this project

What struck me when I walked through the doors of the empty Spode site, particularly when I encountered the China Hall, was that this had once been a busy, noisy, environment that worked to its own rhythm - the repetition of production and processes that took place here for almost 250 years had been transformed into this quiet expanse.

Repetition over Time was an ephemeral response to the quiet that currently existed throughout the site.

Preparatory work for Repetition over time

Ink on paper: this initial work shows ink dripping through a series of funnels from varying heights. This process was to begin to work out how water would impact on the clay.

Installing repetition over time for the british ceramics biennial in Spode 2013

Two tonnes of Puddle clay installed into Spode, over the period of two months water was continuously dripping on the clay gradually softening and transforming it. The sound of this continuous feed subtly referenced the production that took place within the factory for almost 250 years.
