Pestled vessels

About this project

On a visit to a museum in Canberra I came across an Aboriginal grinding stone that had been worn into a vessel by its constant use. It had a beautifully smooth, organic form and I was interested that this had come about as an unconscious result of the grinding action. Relating this to my work in clay I looked at the traditions and qualities of clay as a material and developed a method of making vessels with pestles and mortars pounding into the wet clay and allowing it to respond to the action.
