About this project

I tried to encapsulate many different levels of meaning in this tapestry to express the complexity and diversity of Scotland’s territory and history, making it redolent of the past but also relevant for the present and the future. There are hidden words in the tapestry, looking a little like signal flags, a secret alphabet which once you break the key is easy to decipher. The "messages" contain quotations about the Scots, nationhood and parliament as well as information about the makers.

The tapestry finished and ready to be cut off. On the left, Susan Mowatt one of the weavers. Traditionally tapestries are woven on their side as its easier to accommodate the shorter vertical on the loom but it also makes a stronger fabric because of fewer long slits to sew.
