About this project

“Deegan began to see the toolbox not as an object of agency but instead a container of symbols, an empty gesture for ‘man of substance’.” Crafts Magazine 252, January|Feburary 2015

‘Man of Substance’ is a response to The Cabinet Maker’s Toolbox by Benchmark. In a rethinking of familiar tools, the collection combines the decorativeness traditionally associated with women and the practicality traditionally associated with men to subvert gender stereotypes in a challenging, frank and ironic way.
