About this project

Creating this series of bird pieces has allowed me to fully explore layering of contrasting slip colours to try to capture the colours of these beautiful native birds. I have also chosen to really open up each piece making the birds larger and allowing for my white clay body to show. The birds are the only parts that are glazed creating different colour changes between the matt and glazed surface.

Kingfisher family with Minnows
Photographer: Mark Clayton
This piece shows a total of five Kingfishers, two adults and three chicks. I am very pleased with the subtle colours on the birds backs, chest and wings which were created by layering coloured slips.
Pied wagtail & Pussy willow
Photographer: Mark Clayton
Sgraffito vessel showing a group of Pied wagtails in a Pussy willow
Blue tit & Whitebeam tree
Photographer: Mark Clayton
Ceramic thrown vessel decorated with slips and the technique of sgraffito. These cheeky active birds are a joy to draw and create on a piece and I hope to give the impression that they are chattering away together.
Nuthatch & Hornbeam
Photographer: Mark Clayton
Ceramic thrown vessel decorated with slips and the technique of sgraffito. I chose to show these distinctive native birds climbing the trees as they would in the wild.
Wrens & Hawthorn

Ceramic thrown vessel decorated with slips and the technique of sgraffito. These birds are one of my favourites to draw.
