The eyes of Claire Loder's larger than life-size ceramic heads seem to follow you around. Perhaps that's what she's aiming for. Clare is currently on the Crafts Council's Next Move scheme with a placement at Bath Spa University.

How would you describe your work?
My work is about the communications of the interior world. There are two strands to my work, 'painting' and 'ceramics' – and both are informed by a love of colour and a fascination with naïve and outsider art.
Where does your inspiration come from?
I have always been fascinated by faces and the stories that a face can tell. Sculptural artists such as Leiko Ikemura, Gertraud Mohwold and Xavier Toubes express their subjects with simplicity and power. This combination intrigues me.
What's the process of creation?
The clay helps me in the creation of each head. Although I start sitting in front of the mirror or work from photos, there are marks and textures which the clay accumulates during the making process that help dictate the direction of the work. Once constructed, each head becomes a surface to engage with, the clay being an integral part of my palette of colours and textures.
What are your aims?
Physically and psychologically the focus of my sculptures is the eyes. Most commonly the gaze is averted, inviting the viewer to contemplate what may have happened 'out of shot'. In this way a relationship between viewer and sculpture is established. The world of memories, thoughts, fears and responses - revealed or betrayed by a glance - underpins much of my work.
