Aneta Regel Deleu combines the natural qualities of materials such as organic rock, with malleable materials such as clay. This two-fold approach creates an interesting tension through the combination of man made and natural materials. ‘Seeing them fight against each other’, says Aneta, ‘reinforces the sense of movement and transformation that objects undergo throughout the making process.’ Mostly abstract forms, Aneta’s work could be described as sculptural. Stone mixed with clay is offset with dramatic, often radioactive colours, and the textures are equally unusual - all of which serve to heighten the tension reflected within the work.
Such a compelling approach to ceramics resulted in Aneta being awarded the Craft Council Development Award last year. Since then she has felt much more comfortable in her practice. ‘The support’, she says, ‘was not just financial – although the award did allow me to purchase a much needed kiln, and pay the rent. Instead, its value came from having another ear available to listen.’ Right from the beginning, the support she received from the Craft Council was instrumental in developing a strong sense of self-belief through her work in the studio.
Aneta is currently working on a group of pieces for Origin, including a series of one-off granite sculptures for an outdoor context, and perhaps even a wall piece. This will be her second time at Origin, and she says she is less nervous than the first time round. Aneta received a great response from Origin last year and enjoyed the variety of different people who attended. One year on and with a number of private commissions under her belt, she is confident that collectors, designers, galleries and the general public will respond positively to her new work.
