Eleanor Pritchard

Weaving is one of those disciplines which you either love or hate. Thankfully for us, it's Eleanor Pritchard's passion. She received a Setting Up Grant in 2002 and exhibited at Origin in 2006.

What made you decide to work in your chosen field?

I love the way that colour and structure interact to form weave. Dobby weaving has certain set parameters and yet within these the possibilities are endless. For someone who never liked maths at school I surprised myself by how much I have enjoyed the structure of weave. I graduated from Chelsea College of Art and Design in 2001; a Setting Up Grant (now a Crafts Council Development Award) allowed me to buy my loom and I have a studio in Cockpit Arts where I combine bespoke commission work with designing for production.

What's the process of creation?

I hand-weave all the bespoke commission work. I also sample the mill-woven fabrics myself. The finished designs are then woven up at a traditional mill in Carmarthenshire. This allows me time to experiment with new materials and ideas back in the studio.

Where does your inspiration come from?

I draw inspiration from the English landscape: ploughed fields, hedgerows, flint walls, shingle beaches. I am also influenced by the palette of early to mid-twentieth century English painting with its sense of familiarity and nostalgia. A love of pattern runs through much of my work, unusual accents sitting alongside subtler tones.

What are your aims?

I see myself as being rooted in a British textile tradition and consider my work as a re-interpretation of these traditions in a contemporary context.
