Shoko Koike (b. 1943) draws inspiration from the sea, creating shell-like sculptural forms in Shigaraki stoneware with undulating edges that envelop hand-made and wheel-thrown bodies. Painted with white, opaque glaze, her forms are accentuated with glazes ranging from brown iron to metallic, iridescent or turquoise. One of the first female graduates of the prestigious ceramics department of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts, Koike is among the most celebrated ceramists in Japan, with works in museums throughout the world.
