Hybrid Basketry
Hack a basket and contribute to the growing woven sculptural installation that is developing at Origin. Once you start to be aware of it, you will see basketry everywhere, from furniture and carpets to placemats and lampshades.

The samples here have been collected from freecycle and donated by IKEA to be cut up and given a new life to help us understand more about this unsung technique.
Weaving, plaiting, knotting and coiling are all being demonstrated in the Crafting Space so you can come down to Origin and have a go. Hack, cut and shape. Take your creations with you or add on and transform the evolving display.
Have a break from shopping and spend a little time weaving with our volunteer makers and you will appreciate all the more the time and skill that has gone into some of the other splendid original works on display at the fair.
Hybrid Basketry is an interactive project by Shane Waltener commissioned by the Crafts Council. See more about Shane’s work and basketry in general at guardian.co.uk or www.shanewaltener.com
